Firmly rooted in life

Landscape. Valleys, rivers, mountains. People who live in a particular landscape are shaped by it, and I am very connected to the landscape from which I come: The Lavant Valley in the Austrian state of Carinthia. In the country they say that three Carinthians make a “choral society,” and I feel a great affinity with this deeply rooted rural tradition of singing that is practiced in my homeland.

I come back time and again to this primordial, sometimes primeval music. At times it irritates me. At times I find myself once again in it. At times I come to interpret the music anew and together with the singers and musicians, to keep it alive.

“Sometimes, the notes are just a breath, blown gently into life or made to resonate so uniquely that you are convinced you can feel the music.”
